Deduct a point from the effort gauge

Another strange week. Food appears to be a pretty strong theme this time around, with a spattering of news, music, science and art to round it out.

We’ll start with a thermometer tattoo, and move onto vinyl records and death games; search engine privacy, WHOIS lookup privacy, butterflies and wasps, hysterical photos, phones, the art of observation, repurposed coastal defences, insects and umami, why people are leaving Facebook, Grand Theft Auto V is released, lolita costuming, horoscopes and flying drones, something called a ‘swarm economy’, the internet of things and machines of death, the generation gap, and finishing up with the favoured burger of Hemingway. Emjoy:

Pay attention

You will always feel like your work isn’t good enough. As a salve, or simply as a way to stay sane, be in the world. Ride the train. Listen to strangers. Occasionally, if you’re brave, speak to them. Walk in the city you live. Pay attention. Don’t bother with taking notes, or buying fancy notepads. Try to remember as much as you can. Have just enough confidence in yourself to not be an asshole. Then, get up and go to work and try again.
